Big Island Farmers’ Markets

Hilo Farmers’ Market is open Saturdays and Wednesdays
Hawai’i is a big island (okay…how big is it?) and we have a lot of farmers’s markets. Small agriculture abounds here and the variety of stuff you find offered as you go around the island reflects the local climate and tastes at each market. While some markets strive only for “locally grown,” others (notably Hilo) allow vendors to buy wholesale and offer these goods at their tables. So, it is buyer beware if you are only looking for locally grown produce from local farmers. Ask questions; local farmers are anxious to talk-story about their produce, while others might be less communicative and claim their produce was grown by a cousin, or on a farm on the other side of the island, or something like that.
Some articles, such as garlic, are almost surely imported (China, usually), while bananas, papayas, lettuce, chard, eggplant, and kale are almost surely locally grown. It will pay your peace-of-mind to ask questions, be a little skeptical, and look around; the bigger markets will have several vendors with similar offerings.
Farmers’ markets are generally Saturdays and Sundays, but there are other markets, usually smaller and more local, during the week. Here is a listing of markets going around the island, starting in Hilo. The Hilo Farmers’ Market is the most famous of the lot and is a great tourist attraction as well as a favorite of locals. Each market has its own personality and all are worth a visit. Go holoholo one of these weekends to visit a few, sample the character of these places, and pick up some of the best fresh food on the planet!
I made this list from the best info I could find. If you know of another FMarket or find an error in the listing, please post a comment. Mahalo!
